This is a new book coming out in 2026. It's set in Mali, West Africa and focuses on how ordinary people are helping to plant millions of trees to slow down the advance of the Sahara desert. It highlights howwe can all make a contribution to reversing climate change, as well as giving a peak at what life at the edge of the desert looks and feels like.
Not many people see what life looks like in remote parts of Mali, so the challenge was not what to include, but what to leave out. It's a picture book, so we really only need to get a sense of reality, and this was achieved by selecting visual cues that people may have come across in videos, or photos as a starting point. I wanted to make sure that people see an image of the ladies carrying large containers on ther heads and it took several attempts to find the best composition to show this.
